Why is it that so many pray and desperately hope for miracles and their prayers don’t seem to be answered even amidst tremendous anguish and suffering? Why is it that some are miraculously healed where others feel left out which has caused many to question God in what seems to be hopeless tragic situations? These are some of the concepts that this powerful film Miracles from Heaven seriously addresses. There is just so much mystery in our brokenness in this life and this film addresses this concept in both a tragic and heartwarming way. While a genuine miracle is something that goes beyond what can be explained by science, this film will truly demonstrate why they are worth our time and reflection even if we didn’t get the miraculous healing in the way
we prayed or hoped for.
I won’t say to much more as I do not want this reflection to feel like a review that contains spoilers but I would like to give a few thoughts. Recently while on my last trip to Ottawa I met with a blind priest. It hit me would the beauty of his gifts be as perceived and appreciated to the extent that they are if he were not blind, if he did not struggle with some limitations. His total abandonment to the providence of God to me seems even more evident in this challenging and yet grace filled situation.
Indeed, a further question for me at a more personal level? Would I have founded St. Therese’s Vision for Disability Giftedness in the form of this website if I did not grapple with the challenges of Non-Verbal Learning Disability and ADHD, mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety, many instances of rejection and other heartbreaks throughout my life, one latter example being the sudden death of my mother? In fact, the mother’s dedication in this film whose daughter is diagnosed with what appears to
be an incurable illness reminds me of my own mother’s dedication to me and fight for me in many of the above listed challenges. I believe after watching this film if you are skeptical you will go away challenged if you do not believe in miracles, and I truly believe everyone with an open heart cannot go away from this powerful film unmoved and that Christ’s healing and how precious are lives are we are to Him even in the midst of our own brokenness. Indeed, is that not the essence of what we are about here at St. Therese’s Vision for Disability Giftedness?
